In the West, we believe in a lot of strange things, but violent rites and rituals on women usually isn’t one of them. Unfortunately, many brutal rites of passage are still carried out on women around the world.
In the name of culture, faith, and God, these rituals are performed on women when they reach specific ages or milestones in their lives.

1. Forced tattoos and piercings
In many Amazonian cultures, including those of Paraguay and Brazil, women are tattooed all over their bodies as a coming of age rite. When these women first receive their menstrual cycles, they are tattooed on their stomachs, breasts, and backs. The tattoos are considered to be a method of accentuating the woman’s beauty, not as a means of inflicting pain.
