For many, many years, scientists have been warning us about the great quantities of Arctic ice that are continually melting as a result of climate change. We thought we had a general idea of what to expect as the earth’s climate began to shift. But as it turns out, we’ve barely scratched the surface.
The newest threat to our survival comes in the form of melting permafrost. And it poses a great danger to our survival.
Permafrost is naturally solid. But for the first time in many years, the Arctic permafrost is starting to warm, crack, and melt.
Permafrost covers a quarter of the Northern Hemisphere. Without it, the world would be forever altered.
According to Dr. Thomas Douglas, geochemist at the US Army Corps of Engineers, the Arctic permafrost is chock full of prehistoric grass, woolly mammoths, and woolly rhinoceroses. It also carries twice the amount of carbon found on earth.
