Frostbite is what occurs when the skin is exposed to freezing cold temperatures for a prolonged period of time. The blood vessels contract and this cuts off blood flow and subsequently oxygen to the tissues, which causes the tissues to become necrotic. Amputation usually follows to keep the necrosis from spreading to healthy tissue.
Sleeping with wet socks in below-freezing temperatures isn't a good idea. Sadly, this gentleman learned this lesson the worst way possible.

Is That Me?
This photo was shared on Reddit by a user named Forlorn. It has been up-voted nearly 100,000 times. It's the gentleman's first full body picture post-amputation. His stumps are visible near the bottom of the picture. He finds looking at himself in the mirror a pretty surreal experience. "Is that really me I'm looking at?"
