1. The Robertson voyage
In 1971, the Robertson family boarded a 43-foot wooden schooner. They sailed from port-to-port for 17 months. But on June 5th, 1972, the boat sailed into a pod of killer whales that holed their vessel and caused it to sink 200 miles west of the Galapagos Islands.

The family escaped on a life raft and small dinghy. They survived by drinking rainwater and hunting turtles and flying fish, but after 16 days, their raft became unusable.

After their 38th day as castaways, the Robertsons were found by Japanese fishermen. The father, Dougal Robertson, kept a journal of that time that was turned into a novel and film, Survive the Savage Sea.
