The Trobriand Islanders of Papua, New Guinea, don’t subscribe to many of the constraints on sexuality that we do in the developed west. First of all, they encourage children as young as seven years of age to engage in sexual play. When the children reach adolescence, they begin seriously pursuing sexual partners; which they are encouraged to change often. Women are as free in this process as men. Marriage is solidified by having a
couple eat together; and instead of doing the ol’ walk of shame, you wait at your boo’s house for your Mama to show up with some breakfast.

The Mardudjara Aborigines in Australia, boys have to go through a rigorous ceremony in order to be ushered into manhood. This process begins around ages 10-12. First, the boy is symbolically “knocked dead” by getting a front tooth knocked out and his septum pierced. That’s not all. He’s also circumcised and is required to swallow his own foreskin before the ritual is complete. Finally, he must go hunting and return with food. A pretty far cry from your typical Bar Mitzvah, no?
